Kamejiro and Miyo Shimada lived in Ogoe village in Saitama prefecture with their son, Heikichi. In 1892, when Heikichi was ten years old, he met a mysterious old man. This proved to be a fateful meeting that was followed by a series of strange events.
One day, while Heikichi was on the way home from school with two of his friends, they encountered an old man with a long white beard sitting in the top of a Zelkova tree. Suddenly, the stern-faced old man jumped out of the tree and stood in front of the boys. The boys were very surprised. Two of the boys ran through the gate of a nearby house and into the house. Heikichi however hid himself in the outhouse in the corner of the yard.
